My nickname is KIKO, and I am a Brazilian who embarked on the journey of learning English at the age of 12, entirely self-taught. I grew up as the eldest of three siblings in a humble household during the 1970s, a time when Brazil was under military rule. My father was an alcoholic and abusive, while my mother worked tirelessly as a housekeeper to support our family. Despite these challenges, my circumstances shaped me into a determined individual who never stopped dreaming big.
I have been divorced since 2008 and have been single since then. I am also the proud father of an 18-year-old daughter who inspires me every day.
From a young age, I imagined myself studying in a U.S. high school, appearing in a yearbook, and serving in the ROTC or the Armed Forces. These dreams seemed unattainable, especially for a boy from a poor background in Latin America, Brazil, but they fueled my determination. Even when people laughed at my ambitions, I found strength in their doubt. I knew that I could serve in the U.S. military—all I needed was a green card, as stated in many letters I wrote to the American consulate. I knew I could, but I lacked the support.
I even volunteered for the Iraq War and received a letter from the Consul saying that it was possible. However, by the time I would have reached there, the war would likely be over. In fact, it took much longer than he had expected. I was so organized, so focused, and so informed at the time that all I needed was someone to see my goal and support me, but no one appeared.
At 21, after facing multiple U.S. visa denials, I decided to pursue my dreams through a different path. I ventured to Europe, starting in Portugal and later moving to England, where I began building a career in hospitality. I worked with Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, sailing between Norway and Denmark, and eventually completed a bartending course in England. This step led me to join Carnival Cruise Line, finally fulfilling my lifelong dream of reaching the United States.
Throughout my career, I worked with some of the most prestigious companies in the world, including Disney Cruise Line, Carnival Cruise Line, Pullmantur Cruises, and the Dorchester Hotel in London. My roles ranged across hotels, restaurants, bars, and events, each experience enriching my expertise in the international hospitality industry.
